Shower valve repair

The shower valve had lost all pressure. When the valve was turned to the ON position the pressure would be only for a second and then it would idle to nothing. We proceeded to remove the trim as you can see in the picture. We then shut down the stops and replaced the cartridge.

After testing the valve again it all worked perfectly. Don’t you wish that every job was this easy! Shower valve Granted, we did not have the cartridge with us and we had to return a second day but still we are happy that it turned out to be so straight forward.

Septic Tank Cleaning and Your Home

Imagine leaving for a weekend getaway and coming back to find a pungent smell of rotten eggs has taken over your home.  Or worse, your yard is swamped in pools of sewage.  If not properly maintained, your septic tank could fail and leave a huge mess for you and the environment.

Take Luxemburg Wisconsin for example. Up to 60 percent of sampled wells in a Kewaunee County study contained fecal microbe, the type that are capable of causing illness and even fatalities for humans and calves.

According to the La Crosse Tribune, they study found “microorganisms including Cryptosporidium, a parasite that comes from both people and animals. Researchers estimated Crypto in drinking water is likely infecting 140 of the county’s 20,000 residents each year.” The cause of this contamination is bovine and human waste that enters groundwater through cracks in failed septic systems.

Even in Santa Maria, California, where the water report came back as overall safe, they found certain contaminants that cause residents to avoid the tap entirely.

“Definitely no, we would not drink the water out of the tap,” Santa Maria resident Agkash Lakshmanan said.

Big Problem

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, septic tank failures are one of the main causes of water contamination in the United States. In fact, approximately one in four homes in the United States rely on septic tanks to dispose of their waste, so while one broken septic tank may seem like a non-issue, the spills add up. The EPA states that when a septic system is improperly sited, designed, constructed, or maintained, it can contaminate ground water with bacteria, viruses, nitrates, detergents, oils, and chemicals.

Fortunately, there are key measures you can take to avoiding septic tank failures. First, conserve the amount of water you use. By reducing your showers and using water-saving fixtures you can reduce the amount of water the soil has to absorb.

You should also never dispose of anything down the drain or toilet that doesn’t belong there, such as chemicals, solvents, cleaning fluid, orange peels, coffee grounds or paint. These could clog the drain and potentially kill the good bacteria in the tank. In addition, you should make sure the drainfield is covered well with grass to prevent soil erosion and keep gutters and other drainage systems away from your drainfield and septic tank to avoid excess water.

Finally, regularly pump your tank. This prevents solids from clogging the drainfield. Your tank should be pumped every 2 to 4 years to properly maintain your system.

Trenchless Water Lines: Repairing Your Pipes Without Destroying Your Lawn

Trenchless water line repairs will significantly reduce the costs and disruption that are associated with major excavations, where digging trenches across your yard and tearing up the existing landscaping, driveways and structures commonly occur. Using traditional trenching techniques, you will often be forced to pay for digging up the street in the front of your property, for the rerouting of traffic and for incidental repairs for damages to any municipal property. These costs associated with trenching can range from one or two thousand dollars each, to over twenty thousand dollars in total.

Trenchless water line repair allows you to avoid all the mess, noise, stress and cost that comes with digging trenches to access your damaged water lines. It used to be the case that trenching was the only option, but now it is possible to repair your pipes without destroying your lawn, and perhaps even save money on the final bill as well.

Trenchless Repair Techniques

Trenchless repair techniques for residential and commercial properties have been practiced safely and consistently for over two decades now, yet many property owners remain unaware that trenchless technologies are an option for water line repair. The most common two kinds of trenchless water line repair are pipe bursting and pipe lining.

Pipe liners, also called “cured-in-place piping”, are flexible tubes coated with a resin that are pulled or blown inside your damaged water line, and then inflated. The resin hardens, which creates a new pipe inside your old pipe that has no joints and is highly resistant to corrosion. The lining process reduces the size of the remaining pipe by around one quarter of an inch, but this will not affect the ability of your property to draw water. The pipe lining process usually only involves the digging of one small access hole, which will leave your lawn and surrounding property virtually undamaged once the process is finished.

Pipe lining is not always possible, such as when the water line has joints or has completely collapsed, but the alternative method of pipe bursting can still be performed on a collapsed line if there is adequate space for dragging a cable through your old pipe. The pipe bursting technique works by pulling new pipe through the remains of a damaged one, while also fracturing your old pipe outward at the same time. This process usually only involves two small access holes at either end of the affected length of water line.

According to the experts, the results of pipe lining and bursting techniques are equally durable. The costs of trenchless repair vary widely depending on various factors, such as material prices, water line depth and soil type. Trenchless techniques can cost up to 50% more than traditional digging in some cases, but the entire project can still be more cost effective because you do not need to spend thousands of additional dollars restoring your lawn and other damaged property.

The Right Technique for You

Depending on the conditions where you live and the exact damage to your water lines, traditional trenching may still be the best option, even if it means digging up your lawn and restoring it after. Do some research and discuss with reputable and licensed plumbers about which technique will work best for your specific situation.
