The purpose of the septic tank is to collect the solids and disintegrate them by natural bacteria that grows in a perfectly balanced system. When you kill these bacteria with household cleaners you are in danger of overflowing your system with solids.

All hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Do-it-Best, Anawalt, etc. sell septic tank treatments. These liquids or grains are designed to build bacteria and help dissolve papers and grease. A regular treatment of your septic tank with these products will keep you from spending a lot of money in the end.
